India’s election made coalition arithmetic decisive
The BJP remained the largest party but fell short of a majority on its own.
The event
The results of India’s 2024 general election left the Bharatiya Janata Party with 240 seats in the 543-seat Lok Sabha. That was short of the 272 seats required for a majority. Its alliance retained enough support to form a government, making the contribution of partners politically important.
