Eritrea breaks with Ethiopia as renewed fighting deepens regional crisis
Embassy closure and diplomatic expulsions mark a sharp deterioration between the neighbours.

Eritrea severed diplomatic relations with Ethiopia on 1 October after Addis Ababa announced it would close its embassy in Asmara and expel ten Eritrean diplomats. The rupture adds an interstate confrontation to renewed fighting inside northern Ethiopia.
Accusations and denials
Reuters reports that Ethiopia accuses Eritrea and other countries of supporting an opposition alliance led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Those countries deny the allegation. The diplomatic break establishes a deterioration in relations, not proof of every accusation behind it.
Civilians face a widening emergency
AFP reports deaths, injuries and displacement as fighting continues, while warning that restricted access and disrupted communications make verification difficult. Explosions reported in Addis Ababa have heightened concern, but attribution and casualty details remain uncertain.
From rapprochement to rupture
The two governments had repaired relations in 2018 and later fought on the same side in the Tigray war. The new break removes diplomatic channels at a time when the African Union is calling for restraint.
