EU urges Palestinian elections after postponement to September 2027
The EU links support for the Palestinian Authority with reforms and democratic legitimacy, without announcing an aid suspension.

The European Union has urged the Palestinian authorities to hold legislative and presidential elections as soon as possible after their postponement to September 2027. Its 14 October statement says credible elections are needed for democratic legitimacy, accountability and a two-state solution.
The changed timetable
The PLO executive committee approved delaying the legislative vote originally scheduled for 28 November 2026, according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA on 10 October. The EU says the presidential election had been due early in 2027. The two elections are now intended to take place together in September.
Security constraints and diplomatic pressure
The committee cited insecurity, restrictions on access to Gaza and obstacles to participation across the Palestinian territories. These are its stated reasons for the delay. Acknowledging the constraints facing the Palestinian Authority, the EU nonetheless called for an early vote and said it could support the process with an election observation mission.
What the EU statement changes
The EU ties continued support for the Palestinian Authority to progress on these objectives and reforms. The statement announces no suspension of aid, agreed observation deployment or reversal of the Palestinian decision. Those would require separate decisions.
