Iran–Israel ceasefire announcement draws a call for full compliance
The UN welcomed the announcement while warning that the fighting had to stop.
On 24 June 2025, the UN Secretary-General welcomed President Donald Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. He called on both countries to respect it fully. The same briefing recorded his condemnation of Iran’s attack on Qatar the previous day and urged states to comply with the UN Charter.
Containing regional escalation
The attack on Qatar underlined the danger of the confrontation spreading beyond Israel and Iran. The UN’s response linked support for the announced ceasefire to compliance with the Charter. Sustaining a halt in fighting would reduce the immediate risk of further escalation while leaving the underlying disputes to diplomacy.
