Lai Ching-te wins Taiwan’s presidential election
The official tally gave the Democratic Progressive Party ticket 40.05% of the vote.
Lai Ching-te and running mate Hsiao Bi-khim won Taiwan’s presidential election held on 13 January 2024. The Central Election Commission recorded 5,586,019 votes for their ticket, or 40.05%. Ko Wen-je’s ticket received 26.46%. The result selected the next administration in an election closely watched across the Indo-Pacific.
A vote watched across the Indo-Pacific
The election settled the next leadership of Taiwan’s executive while leaving the wider strategic questions unresolved. Taiwan’s position in technology supply chains gives developments there consequences for businesses and governments abroad. The result therefore carried significance for economic relations as well as security across the Strait.
