Trump’s return to the White House: the electoral map behind the victory
The certified Electoral College result was 312 votes to 226.
The US election of 5 November 2024 returned Donald Trump to the presidency, with JD Vance elected vice-president. The final Electoral College record gives their ticket 312 votes, against 226 for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. These are electoral votes allocated through state contests, rather than a count of individual voters nationwide.
The transition to a second administration
The National Archives records the electors’ vote on 17 December, the congressional count on 6 January and inauguration on 20 January. That sequence transferred the electoral outcome into a new administration. For Britain, the change in Washington placed security cooperation, trade and diplomacy at the centre of preparations for the next presidential term.
