North Korea fires missile more than 700km as Seoul raises alert
South Korea says a ballistic missile was launched from the Wonsan area. Seoul convened an emergency security meeting as analysts examined the flight.

North Korea fired a ballistic missile towards the sea off its eastern coast on Saturday, according to South Korea’s military. It said the projectile travelled more than 700km after a launch near Wonsan at about 06:30 local time.
Emergency response
Seoul raised surveillance and exchanged intelligence with the United States and Japan. South Korea’s presidential National Security Council held an emergency meeting, Reuters reported. US and South Korean officials were analysing the launch details.
What is established
Japan also reported the launch. Its defence ministry said the projectile fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, according to Associated Press. The reporting reviewed for this article did not establish the exact missile model.
Diplomatic backdrop
The launch followed Kim Yo Jong’s rejection on Friday of Seoul’s demand for an apology over alleged North Korean mines in the demilitarised zone. That disputed incident is separate from the flight reported on Saturday.
