UN Security Council demands an end to violence in Myanmar

On 21 December 2022, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2669 on Myanmar. It demanded an immediate end to violence, urged restraint and called for the release of arbitrarily detained prisoners. The Council also stressed the need for humanitarian assistance and protection for medical and relief personnel.

Civilian protection and access

Humanitarian access was central to the Council’s demands. Protection for medical and relief personnel affects whether assistance can reach people exposed to violence. The resolution placed those obligations alongside calls for restraint and the release of prisoners, setting out an international position on the conflict without providing evidence of compliance on the ground.
