South Africa’s new executive put coalition government into practice
The June 2024 appointments followed negotiations between several parties.
The event
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the members of South Africa’s national executive on 30 June 2024. The administration was formed as a Government of National Unity, bringing together parties from across the political spectrum after the national and provincial elections held in May.
Why it matters
The announcement moved the process from negotiations over cooperation to the allocation of ministerial responsibilities. A multi-party executive must translate a shared programme into decisions across departments, while its members retain distinct political identities. This retrospective records the formation of that executive. It does not assume that all participating parties held identical policies or that the original membership remained unchanged thereafter.
