Grenfell investigation reaches prosecutors with files on 54 people

The Metropolitan Police has submitted its remaining Grenfell Tower investigation files to the Crown Prosecution Service, moving the case to the stage at which prosecutors decide whether charges should follow. In a statement on 30 September, the force said the 20 files concern 54 individuals and 20 companies or organisations.

Decisions still to come

Police have asked prosecutors to consider offences including corporate manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, health and safety breaches, fraud and misconduct in public office. Referral does not establish guilt or mean that everyone named will be charged. According to the Met, the CPS has committed to reaching its decisions before June 2027, the tenth anniversary of the fire that killed 72 people.

The scale of the investigation

The force says its work examined the roles of more than 15,000 people and 700 organisations. Investigators also cross-checked material from the public inquiry. For bereaved families and survivors, the next substantive development will be the prosecutors’ decisions; the police announcement does not announce a trial date.
