Stalls destroyed in early-morning fire

A fire at Kingston’s Market Place has left traders facing disruption after stalls were destroyed and nearby properties damaged. London Fire Brigade says eight people were evacuated by police and no injuries were reported.

Trading halted inside the cordon

In a statement dated 6 October, Kingston Council says the Market Place is cordoned off and businesses within the restricted area will not trade until further notice. The notice gives no reopening time. Council leader Andreas Kirsch says the authority is working with partners to support affected traders, businesses and residents and help the market recover.

Investigation under way

The brigade says four engines and around 25 firefighters attended after the first call at 04:33. The fire was extinguished by 06:08. Damage extended to the frontage of neighbouring properties and a small section of a nearby roof. London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police are investigating the cause; neither source reviewed identifies a cause or establishes criminal responsibility.

The council’s closure statement applies to the cordoned area. It should not be read as a closure of every business in Kingston. Visitors should check the council’s latest information before travelling to the market.
