Britain has withdrawn preferential visa processing for Eritrean officials and VIPs, while threatening a wider visa ban unless Eritrea improves co-operation on returns, the Home Office said on Thursday.

The measures announced on 15 October also require Eritrean diplomats to obtain Foreign Office permission before travelling more than 60 kilometres beyond London. The department said this mirrors restrictions on British officials in Asmara.

A conditional wider ban

A blanket ban on Eritrean citizens has not been announced as an implemented measure. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood presented it as a possible further step if the returns dispute is not resolved.

The Home Office said Eritrea had withdrawn returns co-operation earlier this year and that private diplomatic efforts had failed to secure an agreement. Those are the British government's account of the dispute; an Eritrean response has not yet been verified for this report.

The dispute puts access to Britain and the treatment of diplomats at the centre of pressure over migration arrangements. The immediate changes affecting officials should be distinguished from the broader restrictions threatened against nationals.
